IO Family Member Seeks
to Curb Teen Driving Deaths
On November 15, long-term Intelligent Office Family Member and Professional Business Coach David Shavzin launched his latest business venture: Safe Teen Driving Club. Along with business partner, sales and marketing guru Allan Ramsay, David is preparing to tackle head-on the problems faced by the parents of every teenage driver.
The birth of the idea started a few years ago when Allan’s daughter, who is about to turn 21, started driving.
“I began to research what I could do to make her a safe driver. What I found was shocking: All sorts of government websites filled with statistics showing that driving accidents are the number one cause of death for young people age 15-20 – more than guns, drugs, etc.,” said Allan.
So Allan and David got together in 2005 and started researching the methods that commercial companies with large fleets of vehicles on the road use to reduce their accident rates.
“We found that the tools and services that they are use are highly effective in reducing crash rates,” continued Allan. “So we made it our mission to find a way to bring these technologies and systems to the parents of young drivers so they could find security behind the wheel.”
Today Safe Teen Driving Club offers parents a suite of products and services that can effectively monitor and report back to them their teen’s driving habits, miles driven and location of the car.
“We’re effectively allowing parents to become 'virtual passengers' in the car with their teens,” explained David.
Club offerings include GPS vehicle location equipment, a ‘block box’ reporting system and ‘how’s my driving?’ stickers just like you see on the back on commercial trucks.
What’s equally notable is the way that David and Allan are marketing the Club.
“We have talked to a number of schools and found the most effective way to get the word out and have an impact on young people is to do it at the local level,” explained Allan. “Our goal with schools is to actually establish Safe Teen Driving Clubs – where teens promote the idea that if you drive poorly I don’t want to ride with you.”
David and Allan are also approaching the community for support. Regal Nissan of Roswell has recently signed on as a partner. They will be distributing information about the club and training their staff to help parents make wise decisions when purchasing a vehicle for a teen driver.
The Club is also establishing a partner program where businesses can earn commission for referrals and non-profit organizations can sell Club membership as a fundraiser.
“I have a 16 year old daughter with a learners’ permit and another child who will start driving in two years so getting the Club going is clearly a priority for me in 2007,” concluded David.
