Immigration & Family Law Attorney Cathy Vinson Promotes Family Unity, with Help from Intelligent Office
For Cathy Vinson, Esq., it is the human element of practicing law that she finds most fulfilling.
A graduate of Oglethorpe University and the American University Washington College of Law, Vinson spent almost 10 years working in Washington, D.C. She started “on the hill” as an intern, and later a Congressional Black Caucus Fellow, supporting the immigration efforts and proceedings of various legislative bodies before moving on to the U.S. Department of Justice, the Board of Immigration Appeals and the Office of Immigration Litigation.
Vinson returned home to Atlanta in 2002 and opened her own immigration and family law practice, Cathy L. Vinson, LLC.
“We started with family immigration – essentially helping citizens who are married to foreign nationals obtain permanent residency status for their spouses and children,” explained Vinson.
This focus on putting families back together is what fed her family law practice. Now Vinson is able to assist her clients with adoptions and divorce proceedings, too.
Vinson’s adoption work focuses primarily on completing domestic adoptions for people who are adopting children in the U.S. Often the need for an adoption comes from situations where the parent is absent and other family members need to have legal custody of the child in order to provide the best care.
For those new to immigration law: there are two primary objectives for individuals seeking the assistance of an immigration attorney: (1) Getting their Green Card so they can become a lawful, permanent resident and then later (2) Getting naturalized so they can become citizens.
It was at the request of an individual client that Vinson began negotiating divorces. Now Vinson handles mostly uncontested divorces or divorces accomplished through mediation.
“When my clients come to me looking for assistance with a divorce they are usually suffering through a very stressful situation,” continued Vinson. “I’m able to help make their lives more pleasant by resolving issues amicably.”
In addition to helping clients obtain legal residency, Vinson also does naturalization proceedings and represents individuals who have been placed in removal proceedings.
Vinson also does Consular Processing – working with consulates to assist persons who have been granted refugee status to bring their families into the U.S.
Vinson’s clients seeking residency come from a wide variety of nations across African, Europe, and Asia and sometimes even Canada. Interestingly, very few of Vinson’s clients are illegal aliens. Instead most come to the U.S. legally but are seeking assistance with a family unity issue.
Cathy L. Vinson, LLC has been a member of the Intelligent Office family since 2005 when a renovation effort at their previous location forced relocation. Vinson was drawn to IO because their business model and level of service was similar to the flexible, professional environment she had occupied in Washington, D.C. With forecasted growth for 2007, she’s looking forward to expanding her office and her relationship with IO soon.
