Criminal Defense Litigator Linda Sheffield Helps Right Wrongs with Help From Intelligent Office.

When Linda Sheffield first tells you that she is a criminal defense litigator who represents clients in post conviction law, you may envision her clientele as having a dubious reputation. Linda is quick to point out that she represents the families of a lot of people like you and me.

“Today everyone has a criminal in the family because everything is against the law. Everyplace I go… a cocktail party… the doctor… it doesn’t matter where you go there are regular people who are getting tagged for criminal offenses every day,” begins Sheffield.

Sheffield started her career doing trial work in 1977 but quickly moved into the appellate courts. Today her firm, The Law Office of Linda Sheffield, focuses mostly on post conviction law including habeas corpus petitions and appeals.

Sheffield’s clients have already been convicted of a crime when they or their families call her office. Her role is to find constitutional mistakes made in the courts below, or possibly by their lawyers, that violate the constitution.

Those mistakes could be the result of an unlawful search and seizure. It could be that information was withheld that was due to the defendant, a police officer mis-held evidence or simply that their lawyer was ineffective.

“I start by reading the record, talking to the client and then sometimes hiring an investigator,” Sheffield explains. “Everyone is entitled to effective counsel.”

And it is her role to make sure that they receive it.

In addition to criminal defense, Sheffield’s firm also performs administrative law work for clients who are having trouble with a government agency or have received a grand jury subpoena. This usually involves dealing with the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Prisons, the U.S. Parole Commission or the criminal division of IRS.

Through the years, Sheffield’s work in state and federal courts has introduced her to some fairly colorful people. Regardless of background, her clients demand courteous and professional support – the kind that Sheffield’s virtual staff at IO delivers.

Sheffield has occupied permanent office space at Intelligent Office in the past as well as used their phone answering services. Right now she’s between secretaries so IO is again answering her calls.

“I’m so thrilled with the service that I’m getting from IO that I am considering keeping them even after I hire a new secretary,” explained Sheffield. “I may just structure my office differently and continue to have IO answer the phones.”

“IO is a good value for the quality service they provide,” concluded Sheffield.
